What does the Centre for Family Caregivers do?
The Centre for Family Caregivers acts as a coordinating office to further develop support services for people providing care to family members in Berlin. The agency is run by the Diakonisches Werk Berlin-Stadtmitte e.V. It is funded by the Senate Department for Science, Health, Care and Equality.
Through its work, the centre contributes to providing relief and self-care for family caregivers and helps to develop a culture of recognition. To this end, we seek contact with the family members themselves, care providers, political actors and society.

Background: Family caregivers: Berlin’s largest caregiving group
Family caregivers make up the largest body of care providers in Berlin. Around 85 percent of people with care needs live at home and they are overwhelmingly cared for and supported by relatives, friends and neighbours. In Berlin alone, over 200,000 family members take care of their loved ones.
This task is not always easy due to a wide variety of challenges. For this reason, family caregivers need a tailor-made network of counselling, support and relief services.

Touring exhibition

Give family caregivers a face and a voice
Here you can book the touring exhibition “The Everyday Lives of Family Caregivers”.
The travelling exhibition “The Everyday Lives of Family Caregivers” presents the care situation of nine family members providing care in Berlin as examples. It focuses on the great challenges and often moving moments of caring for a loved one. It also illustrates the great diversity of care at home.
Our aim with the exhibition is to raise public awareness of the situation of caregiving family members – the largest body of caregivers in Berlin and throughout Germany. The best way to do this is with faces and specific life stories and situations.
We are not only inviting care providers to display the exhibition in their own facilities: we would also be delighted if companies, schools/colleges or organisations that are not directly involved in caregiving were to use this exhibition to draw attention to family caregivers and give them recognition.
For example, companies can use the exhibition to remove the taboos about the compatibility of caregiving and work and to start a conversation with their employees about care responsibilities.
The exhibition can be loaned out free of charge for up to 21 days. All we ask is that you pick it up and return it to Südstern 10, 10961 Berlin.
